Former Penticton Vee Joey LaLeggia was given awards as the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Defenceman of the Year and Offensive Defenceman of the Year. posted Apr 3, 2014 at 3:00 PMFormer Penticton Vee Joey LaLeggia credits his National Collegiate Hockey Conference Awards as Defenceman of the Year and Offensive Defenceman of the Year to his teammates and coach. “It was an honour to be mentioned in that way,” said LaLeggia of the Denver University Pioneers. “That’s all the work of my teammates making me better, as well as coach Jim Montgomery. He’s awesome, he’s really taught me a lot of the fine points and details of playing better defensive hockey. LaLeggia led Pioneer defenceman in scoring with 12 goals and 23 points in 36 games, missing five to injury. LaLeggia had a good season with the Pioneers, who won the NCHC conference. “I think my game has evolved a lot this year, where I used to be used as pretty much a straight-up offensive specialist,” said LaLeggia, prior to his team losing to the Boston College Eagles 6-2, which has former Vee Isaac MacLeod, in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs. “This year, I’m playing against first lines and playing against the best players on the other team. I’m the first one over the boards for power play and penalty kill. I’m on the ice when we’re up a goal with under two minutes left. It’s been a nice change and I think I’ve really learned a lot from Jim Montgomery here. LaLeggia, who has 34 goals and 90 points in 118 career games with the Pioneers, said it’s been great playing at the college level. He loves the Pioneer program, which he said is great at player development as they always have strong teams and are in contention. “Even this year, everybody wrote us off before the season even started,” he said. “We finished sixth out of eight out of our conference. We end up coming in and winning our conference tournament. We play in such a competitive conference in the NCHC that it’s really anybody’s game on any night. It’s fun to play. There’s no gimmes. There’s no nights off. The NCHC features St. Cloud State, which finished first with a record of 15-6-3 in 24 games, and went 21-10-5 overall. North Dakota was second, followed by Nebraska Omaha, Minnesota Duluth, Western Michigan, Denver, Colorado College and Miami. In their conference, the Pioneers won 10 of 24 games and won 20 games overall. LaLeggia said their season was extremely up and down and inconsistent until the playoffs began. LaLeggia learned a lot from his first two playoff experiences as a Pioneer. “You don’t have time to have a slow start. Don’t have time to have a bad shift,” said LaLeggia, who was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round, 123rd overall in 2012. “You make one mistake and it could cost you a goal, could end your season. You really have to be ready to go, buy into the team system. Put the team ahead of yourself. Taking a hit and sacrificing the body to block a shot are things he said that have to be done to win. LaLeggia said it was a thrill for him to be drafted by the Oilers as it brought him closer to his dream. He’s enjoyed attending camps in Edmonton and said he looks forward to hopefully having a future with them. LaLeggia also still follows the Vees, who he tallied 33 goals and 147 points in 112 BCHL Games. “I saw the Game 7 loss the other night,” he said. “Even as an alumni, it’s tough to hear that they lose to Vernon. I’m proud of the season they had. The 2014 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four Tournament starts this week in Philadelphia and there are eight Vees alumni taking part. That is the most alumni participating out of any BCHL and Canadian Junior Hockey League team, and in fact, no other junior hockey franchise in North America has as many alumni playing as the Vees. Connor, Mike and Ryan Reilly suit up for the Minnesota Golden Gophers who will take on Mark MacMillan, Wade Murphy, Brendan O’Donnell, Troy Stecher and the University of North Dakota on April 10. Isaac MacLeod and the Boston College Eagles face Union College in the other semi-final.
